My New HTC Desire

I just got a new phone and just had to visit this old crank of a blog of mine to write about it!

On that note, Im not sure what to do with this site, I planned to write more on it, but lately Ive been using facebook for my ramblings and chats, blogs seem a bit last decade at the moment… but I digress… back to my new toy!

I have spent ages shopping around for the best mobile phone for my needs. Of course I started out looking at the iPhone 4, but frankly balked at the price of the thing. It is very expensive, and though pretty I could not justify the cost.

Also, I dont like the way Apple lock everything down regarding their apps, special screws (so you cannot open the case) and their general attitude towards their customers. So, slick as the iphone is, and despite its really high build quality I passed.

So, what is the next best thing to the iphone? Well, in my opinion that would have to be an Android phone by HTC. These things have really been taking the market by storm of late, and I did not have to go far to get a demo as a few friends of mine are now using HTC phones.

The thing that makes HTC a little bit special is their custom interface (SENSE) which is loaded on top of the default Android operating system from Google. This does have one draw back though, which is that you have to wait longer for the OS updates than you would with a pure Android phone like a Nexus. This is because you have to wait for HTC to update their “SENSE” skin for each Android release before you can update your phone.

So, if running the latest possible version of Android matters to you then HTC may not be for you, but for me, I am happy to trade a slightly older OS to get the enhanced usability offered by HTC.

In terms of prices, there are lots of great deals around on HTC phones at the moment, I was even able to find a dedicated comparison site for HTC contract phones (bestmobilephonedeals.me) which was pretty cool. It lists the same deals as other sites, but its a little quicker as you can find the HTC deals faster than a larger generic site.

Overall Im really pleased with this phone, having so many apps freely available is a great bonus, though I think the net result will be that I blog less and use FaceBook more… blogging is not easy from a phone, but the desire has a great little app for FaceBook :P
